Power BI for Mac: there is no Mac app — here are the four ways Mac users build reports

There is no Power BI Desktop for macOS: Microsoft lists Windows 10 or later as the minimum requirement, and the app installs only on Windows. Mac users have four ways to work in Power BI. The Power BI service in a browser now lets you get data, build and edit semantic models with DAX, and design reports, which covers most day-to-day work. Windows 11 for Arm running in Parallels Desktop, which Microsoft authorizes on Apple silicon Macs, runs Power BI Desktop itself. Windows 365 Cloud PCs and Azure Virtual Desktop are the two virtual environments Microsoft says fully support Power BI Desktop. And a Windows PC remains the reference setup. Sharing needs a Pro licence however you build. Each route below comes with what it costs and where it falls short.

1. The Power BI service in your browser

Sign in at app.powerbi.com in Safari or Chrome. According to Microsoft's guide to editing semantic models in the Power BI service, you can create a new semantic model with Get data (the Power Query experience), transform data in the Power Query editor, create relationships, DAX measures, calculated columns and tables, define row-level security, and build a report on top — all in the browser, with changes saved automatically.

Where it falls short: Microsoft lists gaps against Desktop, including some connectors that cannot add import tables on the web (custom connectors among them), models with incremental refresh that cannot use the Power Query editor on the web, and a handful of modelling options not yet available. Edits save immediately with no undo, although semantic model version history can restore an earlier state. Reports built on a model someone published from Desktop open fine; complex models are still usually maintained in Desktop.

What it costs: a free account can build for itself; publishing and sharing need Power BI Pro at $14 per user per month, and so does everyone who reads the shared report — see Power BI pricing.

2. Windows 11 in Parallels Desktop on an Apple silicon Mac

Microsoft names Parallels Desktop as an authorized way to run the Arm versions of Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise on Macs with Apple silicon, in its support article on using Windows 11 on M-series Macs. Power BI Desktop's requirements now name Windows on ARM explicitly: it needs the September 2025 cumulative update (KB5065789), per Microsoft's Power BI Desktop download page. Parallels documents the installation in KB 129794.

What it costs: a Parallels subscription, a Windows 11 licence, and memory — Power BI Desktop wants at least 2 GB available and recommends 4 GB, on top of what Windows itself uses. Where it falls short: Microsoft's article notes that the Arm version of Windows 11 has limits with some hardware and apps, and nested virtualization is not supported.

3. A Windows 365 Cloud PC or Azure Virtual Desktop

Microsoft's download page states that Power BI Desktop is fully supported on Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365, and that other virtual desktop environments — Citrix among them — are not. A Cloud PC is Windows streamed to a Mac app or a browser, so the Mac itself does no Windows work. What it costs: a Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop subscription, usually arranged by IT. Where it falls short: everything runs over the network, and it is an organisational purchase rather than something a single analyst turns on.

4. A Windows PC

Still the reference setup: Power BI Desktop is a free download from the Microsoft Store or the Download Center, updated monthly, and only the latest version is supported. Many Mac-first teams keep one Windows machine or Cloud PC for the person who maintains the models, while everyone else works in the browser.

If what you need is marketing dashboards, not Power BI

TableBI runs from the macOS terminal: a command-line tool that your own agent, such as Claude Code, drives. Is there Power BI for Mac?
