Power BI alternatives for marketing teams, matched to the reason you are leaving

Published · 7 min read

The right Power BI alternative depends on why you are leaving, and marketing teams usually leave for one of three reasons: Power BI Desktop runs only on Windows, everyone who opens a shared report needs a $14-a-month Pro licence unless the organisation buys Fabric F64 capacity, and Power BI has no built-in connector for Google Ads, Meta Ads or Search Console. Looker Studio (renamed Data Studio in April 2026) answers all three for Google's own data at no cost. Tableau runs on a Mac but keeps a paid seat for every reader. Databox, DashThis and AgencyAnalytics are marketing dashboards with the ad connectors built in, priced by sources, dashboards or clients. Metabase is open source for teams that already have a database. TableBI lets your own AI agent query ad and search data in SQL and share the answer as a link that needs no seat. Prices below are as listed on September 30, 2026.

Three reasons marketing teams leave Power BI

  1. The Mac. Microsoft lists Windows as the minimum requirement for Power BI Desktop; on a Mac you build in the browser, in Windows under Parallels, or on a Cloud PC. The Power BI for Mac guide covers each route.
  2. Readers pay. Below Fabric F64 capacity, every person who opens a shared report needs Pro at $14 a user a month, paid yearly. Three people building and twelve reading is fifteen licences, $210 a month — the Power BI pricing guide works it through.
  3. The ad connectors. Power BI has no built-in connector for Google Ads, Meta Ads or Search Console; they arrive through a paid partner connector, Power Query against each API, or a warehouse, as the marketing data sources guide sets out.

If none of the three applies — your organisation already owns Pro through Microsoft 365 E5, the models are complex and the team is on Windows — Power BI is probably still the right tool, and the cheapest route is a better connector, not a new BI tool.

Prices read September 30, 2026 from each vendor's pricing page (sources below). Annual billing unless stated; Metabase Starter includes five users and adds $6 per user a month.

Looker Studio — if the data is Google's and the readers are many

Free, in the browser, shared by link like a Google Doc, with built-in connectors for Google Ads, GA4, Search Console and Sheets. For the three reasons above it is the most direct answer, and for fifteen readers it costs nothing. Where it falls short: Meta and most non-Google sources need a paid partner connector, blending is limited, and every report open re-queries the source. The Looker Studio vs Power BI comparison goes deeper.

Tableau — if you need more analysis, not less cost

Tableau Desktop runs on macOS, per Tableau's technical specifications, so it answers the Mac problem, and it is the stronger analytical tool. It does not answer the other two: readers need a Viewer licence ($15 a month on Standard), and there is no built-in Google Ads or Meta connector. Three Creators and twelve Viewers on Standard is $405 a month, about twice the Power BI bill. See Tableau pricing.

Databox, DashThis, AgencyAnalytics — if the job is a marketing dashboard

These are built for exactly the connectors Power BI lacks, and priced on what marketing teams count. Databox is free for three sources and one user, then $71 a month for Analyst, metered by sources, users and AI credits. DashThis prices on dashboards and sources, from $44 a month for three dashboards. AgencyAnalytics charges $20 per client a month with every feature included. Where they fall short: they are dashboards, not modelling tools — a question the template did not anticipate is harder to answer than in Power BI. The Databox, DashThis and AgencyAnalytics comparisons have the full price tables.

Metabase — if your data is already in a database

Metabase's open-source edition is free with unlimited users; Starter is $100 a month including five users, and Pro $575 a month including ten. It connects to databases and warehouses, not to ad platforms, so it replaces Power BI for a team whose marketing data already lands in Postgres, BigQuery or similar. Where it falls short: without that pipeline it has nothing to read.

TableBI — if an AI agent should answer the questions

TableBI is a different shape: a command-line tool your own agent, such as Claude Code, drives. It connects Search Console, GA4 and Google Ads live and Meta Ads in beta, answers in read-only SQL, and pins any answer to a public, read-only dashboard URL that refreshes itself — readers open it without an account or a seat, and anyone with the link can see it. It is free for one source and one live dashboard. It is not a modelling tool and has no white-label reports, scheduled PDF or email delivery, or alerts.

terminal
npm i -g @tablebi/cli
tablebi login
tablebi connect google_ads # Google sign-in opens in your browser
tablebi ask "SELECT campaign, SUM(cost) AS spend,
             roas(SUM(conversion_value), SUM(cost)) AS roas
FROM facts WHERE platform = 'google_ads'
GROUP BY campaign ORDER BY spend DESC"

FAQ

What is the best free alternative to Power BI?

For marketing data from Google, Looker Studio (now Data Studio): it is free, runs in the browser, has built-in Google Ads, GA4 and Search Console connectors, and viewers need no licence. For data already in a database, Metabase's open-source edition is free with unlimited users.

Is there a Power BI alternative that runs on a Mac?

Yes. Tableau Desktop runs on macOS, and Looker Studio, Databox, DashThis and Metabase run in a browser. Power BI Desktop itself runs only on Windows.

Which Power BI alternative is cheapest for sharing reports?

Looker Studio, because readers need no licence; a TableBI dashboard is also opened by link with no seat. In Power BI every reader needs Pro at $14 a month below Fabric F64, and Tableau charges $15 a month per Viewer on its Standard edition.

Does Power BI connect to Google Ads and Facebook Ads?

Not with a built-in connector. Google Ads and Meta Ads reach Power BI through a paid partner connector, custom Power Query against each API, or a warehouse in between.

When should a marketing team stay on Power BI?

When the organisation already owns Pro through Microsoft 365 E5 or Office 365 E5, the team works on Windows, and the models are complex enough to need Power BI's modelling. Then a better connector is cheaper than a new BI tool.
