Tableau alternatives for marketing teams: what two builders and ten readers cost elsewhere

Published · 6 min read

For a marketing team, the Tableau alternatives worth pricing are Looker Studio (free, with Google's ad and search data built in), Power BI (a $14 seat for every builder and reader), Metabase (open source, for data already in a database), Databox or DashThis (dashboards with ad connectors included) and TableBI (an AI agent queries your ad and search data and shares a link). Tableau itself, on its Standard edition, costs $75 a month per Creator and $15 per Viewer, billed annually, with no monthly plans — so two people building and ten reading is $300 a month, or $580 on Enterprise. It also has no built-in connector for Google Ads or Meta Ads, and its GA4 connector is listed as deprecated pending a replacement. Below: the same team priced on each alternative as of September 30, 2026, and what each one gives up.

Two builders and ten readers, priced

Tool2 builders + 10 readers, per monthHow it is counted
Tableau Cloud Standard$3002 Creators × $75 + 10 Viewers × $15, billed annually
Tableau Cloud Enterprise$5802 × $115 + 10 × $35
Power BI$16812 Pro licences × $14, paid yearly — every reader needs one below Fabric F64
Looker Studio / Data Studio$0 (or $18 with Pro)Readers open a link; Data Studio Pro is $9 per user per project
Metabase$0 self-hosted, or $142 on StarterOpen source is free with unlimited users; Starter $100 includes 5 users, then $6 each
TableBI$0 for one source and one dashboardReaders open a public read-only link; Operator is listed at $29 a month

List prices read September 30, 2026 from each vendor's pricing page (sources below). Hosting, connectors and warehouse costs are extra where they apply, and they are where most of the difference goes for marketing data.

The part the seat price hides: getting ad data in

Tableau has no Google Ads connector — it stopped working when Google shut the AdWords API in 2022 — and none for Meta Ads, so both arrive through BigQuery, Google Sheets, a partner connector or file exports; the routes are priced in Google Ads to Tableau and Facebook Ads to Tableau. Its Google Analytics 4 connector is extract-only and listed on Tableau Exchange as deprecated, with a replacement due in release 26.3, per the GA4 to Tableau guide.

Power BI and Metabase share the gap: neither has a built-in Google Ads or Meta connector. Looker Studio closes it for Google's own sources and leaves Meta to partners. Databox and DashThis include the ad connectors in the price — Databox is free for three sources and one user, then $71 a month for Analyst; DashThis starts at $44 a month for three dashboards — which is why a marketing team comparing only seat prices usually picks the wrong tool.

What each alternative gives up

  • Power BI — the closest like-for-like and the cheapest seat, but Power BI Desktop runs only on Windows (the Mac routes) and every reader still needs a licence. See Power BI pricing.
  • Looker Studio — free and shared by link, with less analytical depth than Tableau: limited blending, no governed data sources, and every report open re-queries the source. The Looker Studio vs Tableau comparison sets out where each wins.
  • Metabase — the open-source Tableau alternative most teams try first, and a good one if the data is already in Postgres, BigQuery or another database; without that pipeline it has nothing to read. Apache Superset is the other common open-source choice, with the same requirement.
  • Databox · DashThis — dashboards built around marketing connectors, not analysis tools; a question the dashboard was not designed for is harder to answer than in Tableau.
  • TableBI — not a visual analysis tool. It connects Search Console, GA4 and Google Ads live and Meta Ads in beta, your own agent (Claude Code, for example) answers in read-only SQL, and an answer can be pinned to a public, read-only URL that refreshes itself — anyone with the link can see it. No white-label reports, scheduled PDF or email delivery, or alerts.

When to keep Tableau

When the analysis is the product: large or complex data, governed published data sources, analysts who live in the tool, and readers who explore rather than glance. Tableau Desktop also runs natively on macOS, which Power BI Desktop does not. In that case the fix for marketing data is usually a better route into Tableau — BigQuery or a partner connector — rather than a new BI tool.

A dashboard link instead of ten Viewer seats

If the ten readers only need to see a handful of marketing numbers, a pinned TableBI answer is one route that removes the seats. Your agent writes the query; the pin turns it into a live URL.

claude code → tablebi
# spend and ROAS by channel, pinned to a link the readers open without a seat
tablebi ask "SELECT platform_label(platform) AS channel, SUM(cost) AS spend,
             roas(SUM(conversion_value), SUM(cost)) AS roas
FROM facts WHERE date > (SELECT MAX(date) FROM facts) - 28
GROUP BY platform ORDER BY spend DESC"
tablebi pin --title "Paid channels, latest 28 days" --widget "ROAS by channel=SELECT …"

FAQ

What is the best alternative to Tableau for marketing?

For Google data and many readers, Looker Studio: free, shared by link, with Google Ads, GA4 and Search Console built in. For a cheaper like-for-like BI tool, Power BI at $14 a seat. For dashboards with ad connectors included, Databox or DashThis.

What is a free alternative to Tableau?

Looker Studio is free and needs no licence for readers. Metabase's open-source edition is free with unlimited users if you host it and your data is already in a database. Tableau Public is free too, but everything published to it is public.

Is Power BI cheaper than Tableau?

Per seat, yes: Power BI Pro is $14 a user a month, against Tableau Standard's $75 per Creator and $15 per Viewer. Two builders and ten readers cost $168 a month in Power BI and $300 on Tableau Standard, at September 2026 list prices.

What is an open-source alternative to Tableau?

Metabase and Apache Superset are the common choices. Both read databases and warehouses rather than ad platforms, so marketing data needs a pipeline into a database first.

Does Tableau connect to Google Ads and Facebook Ads?

Not directly. Tableau has no built-in Google Ads or Meta Ads connector; the data reaches it through BigQuery, Google Sheets, a partner connector or file exports.
