Tableau pricing in 2026: Creator, Explorer and Viewer licences, the editions, and what a team actually pays
Tableau is priced per person and per role: on Tableau Cloud's Standard edition a Creator costs $75, an Explorer $42 and a Viewer $15 per user per month, billed annually; on the Enterprise edition the same roles cost $115, $70 and $35. Those are Tableau's list prices on September 30, 2026. Every deployment needs at least one Creator, every plan is an annual contract, and the Cloud+ edition and the Tableau+ Bundle are priced by sales, as is capacity-based pricing that removes per-viewer licences. Tableau Desktop Free Edition and Tableau Public cost nothing but cannot share privately. Below: the price table, what each role can do, three worked team budgets, and the costs that sit outside the licence.
Tableau prices by edition and role (September 2026)
| Licence | Standard edition | Enterprise edition | What the role does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creator | $75 / user / month | $115 / user / month | Connects and prepares data, publishes data sources, builds workbooks; includes Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Builder |
| Explorer | $42 / user / month | $70 / user / month | Edits and builds views on data someone has already published |
| Viewer | $15 / user / month | $35 / user / month | Views and interacts with dashboards, subscribes, downloads |
| Cloud+ / Tableau+ Bundle | Contact sales | Adds Tableau Agent across the product, Premier Success and more sites; the bundle adds Tableau Next | |
All prices billed annually, from Tableau Cloud pricing, read September 30, 2026. Enterprise adds Data Management, Advanced Management, eLearning and up to 10 sites to Standard's three.
Tableau Server, the self-managed product, lists the same per-user prices on its pricing page; the difference is that you run the servers. Tableau says it does not sell monthly plans for any product.
What a team actually pays: three worked budgets
| Team | Standard, per year | Enterprise, per year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 analyst sharing with 10 readers (1 Creator, 10 Viewers) | $75 + 10 × $15 = $225 a month → $2,700 | $115 + 10 × $35 = $465 a month → $5,580 |
| A marketing team (1 Creator, 2 Explorers, 10 Viewers) | $75 + $84 + $150 = $309 a month → $3,708 | $115 + $140 + $350 = $605 a month → $7,260 |
| An agency with 40 client contacts (2 Creators, 40 Viewers) | $150 + $600 = $750 a month → $9,000 | $230 + $1,400 = $1,630 a month → $19,560 |
Readers dominate every budget above, which is why Tableau also offers capacity-based pricing through sales: you license Creators and Explorers and pay for Viewer access by capacity rather than by name. Whether that is cheaper depends on a quote, not a list price.
The free options, and where each one stops
- Tableau Desktop Free Edition gives full authoring against Excel, CSV and database files stored on your machine. Per Tableau's edition comparison, it cannot publish to Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server, and it cannot share packaged workbooks.
- Tableau Public is free and publishes to the public web. Its data sources are limited to files and a short list of services — Google Drive, JSON, Excel, OData, PDF, spatial, statistical and text files — so it cannot connect to Google Analytics or ad platforms, and anything published there is public.
Neither is a way to share a private marketing dashboard with a client or a colleague.
What marketing data costs on top of the licence
Tableau connects natively to Google Analytics and BigQuery, but has no Google Ads or Meta Ads connector, and its old Google Ads connector stopped working in 2022. Ad data arrives through a partner connector, the BigQuery Data Transfer Service or exports — each priced in the Google Ads to Tableau and Facebook Ads to Tableau guides. A partner connector adds from about $19 a month (Windsor.ai Basic, billed annually) to $499 a year per desktop (CData's Tableau connector), on top of the Creator licence of whoever builds with it.
If the goal is a shared marketing dashboard, not Tableau
TableBI is not a Tableau connector and does not replace Tableau for visual analysis. It covers one narrower job: Search Console, GA4 and Google Ads live and Meta Ads in beta in one store, queried in read-only SQL by your own agent, with any answer pinned to a public, read-only URL that refreshes itself — readers need no licence, and anyone holding the link can see it. It is free for one source and one live dashboard, and has no white-label, scheduled delivery or alerts.
FAQ
How much does Tableau cost per month?
On Tableau Cloud Standard, $75 per Creator, $42 per Explorer and $15 per Viewer per user per month, billed annually; on Enterprise, $115, $70 and $35. A deployment needs at least one Creator, so the smallest paid setup is $75 a month on Standard, billed as $900 a year.
Is Tableau free?
Two editions are free: Tableau Desktop Free Edition, which works on local files and cannot publish or share, and Tableau Public, which publishes to the open web and connects only to files and a short list of services. Sharing privately needs paid licences.
Does Tableau have monthly plans?
No. Tableau sells annual contracts billed annually; the per-month prices on its pricing page are the annual price divided by twelve.
What is the difference between Creator, Explorer and Viewer?
Creators connect and prepare data and publish data sources, and get Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Builder. Explorers build and edit views on data that has already been published. Viewers look at and interact with dashboards, and can subscribe and download.
Is Tableau Server cheaper than Tableau Cloud?
The per-user list prices are the same. Tableau Server adds the cost of running the servers yourself, which is why it is usually chosen for data-residency or regulatory reasons rather than price.
